Our introduction to kinetic sand art.
Our most ambitious in-house project, SANDSARA, is a brand born from the vision of our CTO, Ed. We've handled every aspect—from product and brand design to engineering, manufacturing, and logistics. The heart of SANDSARA is a custom-developed mechanism that animates an endless series of sand patterns, creating a meditative visual experience. Across three iterations—Mini, Wooden, and Crystal—we’ve worked with diverse materials, including precision-milled plastics, natural woods, and hand-blown glass, to bring a modern take on the automatic Zen garden to life.
Mechanical Engineering.
SANDSARA’s soul lies in its silent, precise movement. To achieve this, we engineered a custom mechanism capable of driving a magnetic ball with fluid motion across fine sand—without visible tracks, noise, or stutters. The system required solving challenges in torque distribution, magnetic resistance, and long-term durability. Our engineering team iterated through multiple prototypes, combining 3D-printed parts, CNC-milled components, and precision bearings to ensure consistent, maintenance-free operation at scale.
Design.
The visual and tactile experience of SANDSARA is central to its emotional impact. We approached the design holistically—from its sculptural form and material palette to how users interact with it. Each version balances minimalism with craft: the Original features rich natural wood, the Crystal uses hand-shaped glass for a weightless feel, and the Mini reimagines the concept in a compact footprint. The product’s interface—via app and lighting—was also designed to feel intuitive and serene, elevating it from object to ritual.
Scaling the Brand.
With over 30,000 units sold worldwide, scaling SANDSARA meant building a supply chain capable of high-mix, low-defect manufacturing across three product lines. We’ve implemented strict quality control protocols at each assembly stage, partnered with reliable suppliers for specialty components, and adapted logistics flows for global fulfillment. Thanks to our firsthand experience as creators, we balanced cost-efficiency with user satisfaction—ensuring that each piece retains the craftsmanship and functionality the brand is known for, even at scale.
